The tech job market continues to shift as companies recalibrate their hiring strategies in response to economic uncertainty, technological change, and the growing influence of AI. Recent reports, and Paragon’s own observations, point to a landscape full of both challenges and opportunities for IT professionals.

According to CompTIA’s latest Tech Jobs Report, tech employment declined in June, with the steepest drops in tech manufacturing. While this might sound discouraging, not all roles are slowing down. In fact, demand remains strong for critical positions such as:

  • Software developers and engineers
  • System engineers and architects
  • Tech support specialists
  • Cybersecurity engineers and architects
  • Network engineers and architects

The fastest-growing area? Dedicated AI roles. AI architects and engineers are becoming some of the most sought-after specialists, reflecting how rapidly artificial intelligence is reshaping IT departments.

AI’s Growing Influence on the Job Market

CIO.com’s recent State of the CIO survey revealed that 53% of IT leaders expect AI to replace some headcount in the near future. While many experts believe AI will augment rather than replace most roles, the reality is that layoffs tied to AI adoption are increasing. Tech professionals who invest in AI-related skills will be best positioned to remain competitive as this technology becomes a core part of IT operations.

The Staffing Industry Analysts Jobs Report found that Iowa experienced the sharpest employment declines (-0.33%). For Paragon’s core markets – Iowa, Minnesota, Arizona, and Nebraska – hiring remains slower than normal, as many clients are taking a “wait and see” approach before committing to new talent.

Despite the slowdown, the market is rich with exceptional talent, especially middle management and senior-level IT professionals.
