Candidate Fraud Isn't New. AI Just Made It Harder to Catch.

Candidate fraud in IT has been around for a long time. For years, hiring managers have run into some version of the same scenario: the person who nailed the first interview isn't the same person who shows up for the second one, or for the job itself. Proxy interviews, resume embellishment, and misrepresented experience predate ChatGPT by more than a decade.

What has changed is the sophistication. AI has made every one of those tactics faster, cheaper, and harder to detect. And the volume of candidates flowing through hiring pipelines has grown enough that traditional screening — a phone call, a video interview, a resume check — no longer catches what it used to.

The Threat Has Escalated

According to GetReal Security's most recent research, 41% of IT, cybersecurity, risk, and fraud leaders say their organization has already hired and onboarded a fraudulent candidate. 88% of organizations encounter deepfake or impersonation attacks at least occasionally. Gartner projects that by 2028, one in four candidate profiles worldwide will be fake.

The tactics show up across the entire pipeline. Checkr's 2025 survey of 3,000 hiring managers found that 35% had confirmed a proxy attended a virtual interview, and 23% of impacted organizations reported losses of more than $50,000. Pindrop tracked a 1,300% year-over-year jump in deepfake attempts during hiring in 2025. And in January 2025, the FBI issued a public advisory on North Korean IT workers using AI face-swapping in video interviews to secure remote roles inside U.S. companies, then extorting data and credentials once employed.

The pattern isn't new. The scale and technical sophistication behind it are.

What's Actually Changed

The old version of the problem was one person sending another person to the interview. The new version is AI assistance, remote access, and hidden overlays running during the interview itself — with a real candidate on camera who still can't do the work. Traditional screening was never designed to detect any of it.

The gap in defenses is measurable. Only 31% of companies have deployed any form of AI or deepfake detection. 48% of HR professionals have received zero training on AI-driven hiring fraud. The tooling available to candidates has advanced faster than the tooling available to most hiring teams.

Why This Hits IT Harder

Candidate fraud isn't evenly distributed. Finance and IT account for the majority of confirmed cases, with IT alone representing more than 30% of hiring fraud incidents. IT roles are often remote, assessments are technical, and the access granted on day one is significant. When a fraudulent hire lands inside an IT organization, the exposure isn't just wasted salary. It's system access, customer data, source code, and credentials.

How Paragon's Validation Process Has Evolved

Paragon has been validating candidate identity for well over a decade. Long before deepfakes and AI overlays, we were capturing candidate identity markers during initial screening so we could confirm the same person showed up at every subsequent stage. That practice caught more misrepresentation than most clients realized.

As candidate fraud and AI-assisted interviewing have grown more sophisticated, we've made a significant investment in advanced validation technology to keep pace:

  • Identity Verification — helps confirm candidate identity and identify potential impersonation or fraudulent activity
  • Location Validation — detects VPNs, proxies, masked IP addresses, and other technology that may misrepresent a candidate's location
  • Role-Specific Technical Assessments — allows us to build customized assessments around the actual role and technology stack rather than relying solely on generic skills tests
  • Assessment Integrity — helps identify the use of AI assistance, remote access, hidden overlays, and other outside support during assessments
  • Additional Candidate Intelligence — gives our recruiting team another objective layer of information to evaluate candidates before they reach our clients

This investment is part of Paragon's ongoing commitment to evolving our recruiting and validation process as the market changes — reducing hiring risk while ensuring our clients spend their time with candidates who have been thoroughly vetted.

Hire With Confidence

The mechanics of candidate fraud will keep evolving. What matters is whether the validation process evolves with them. Paragon has been doing this work for a long time, and we've continued to invest as the problem has changed. That's what allows our clients to hire with confidence.
