When you take the average tech salary in Iowa--$71K--and enter that into a cost of living calculator (at Money.CNN.com), here's the comparable salary--"how far it will go"--in the top 10 cities on the 2014 Dice.com salary survey.
In five of the top ten cities, your cost of living adjusted salary is higher than the average tech salary. Austin and Houston are the only cities that compare favorably to Des Moines (and their average tech salary is higher).
The Dice survey ranks the average salary by job title and (no surprise) C-level jobs own the top spot with a national average of $132,974. Looking through some of the openings we've recruited for, here's how some of our opportunties in Des Moines stack up against Dice.com's data.
Architects--systems and data--are the second and third highest paid positions at $125K and $118K. In Des Moines, the salary for these positions averages $115K for systems architects and $105K for data architects.
Project managers in Des Moines make an average of $96,000 ($109,000 nationally; 5th highest average salary) while database administrators average $85,000 ($101,000 nationally; #7 on the list). Web Developers in Des Moines average $66K (the Dice survey says $78,306 nationally (16th on the list).
