iResume
Nothing gets our recruiters howling more than a resume filled with tables and text boxes. We asked some of our HR contacts about this bad habit and they asked us why we were still dealing with resumes? Had we not heard of LinkedIn? "Just cut and paste," they said. Of course that's an exaggeration, but hardly a stretch. Our HR friends reminded us that LinkedIn (and other social media) continues to increase its influence on the job search. Here are some of the ways HR uses it:
- They check to see if your resume matches your LinkedIn profile (do the dates match, etc.)
- They look at your recommendations
- They look at your connections
- They look at how you sell your skills and experience
As one HR specialist put it, "LinkedIn IS the resume." So now if you're heading to LinkedIn to update your profile but don't want everyone to see the 137 status updates as a result, here's how to prevent that.
And don't forget Facebook. Former Paragon recruiter Dena Furst says Facebook plays a big role in her job recruiting nationally for a local insurance company. If image is important in the job she's recruiting for, she's looking at photos in your profile. Here's a helpful link if you want to adjust those settings.
